LFW Diary SS11 Highlights: Vivienne Westwood Red Label

As we all know Vivienne Westwood is a BIG player in British fashion so it came as no great surprise that I didn’t get a ticket to her LFW show, although I’m holding out it’ll happen one day! Rather admirably in recent years Dame Westwood has used her shows to highlight great political causes through active resistance manifestos with this season following suit. With her SS11 collection entitled Reprieve (in support of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners’ charity), the setting of the Red Label show was to be indicative of a military camp and rather controversially a life-sized heart was used as a powerful backdrop, and a not-so-subtle reminder of the torture that took place.

With painted ‘combat’ faces, models were sent down the catwalk in trademark Westwood creations: high waisted pencil skirts, sailor shirts and balloon shaped peasant dresses, accentuated by a colour palette of olive green, muddy brown and flesh. Slogan t-shirts were cleverly juxtaposed with elegantly draped evening dresses in brocade and suiting fabrics.

As always Westwood’s vibrant personality informed the collection which saw her produce fantastic brogues in alternating colours and a selection of kooky hats and oversized printed bags, proving that for the Dame it was very much business as usual.
